Why delivery matters more than ever in ecommerce

For years, businesses have tended to treat delivery as a cost centre.

Success was measured largely through fulfilment speed, carrier rates and cost per shipment. But consumer behaviour has changed. Delivery now has a direct bearing on conversion, average order value, customer trust, repeat purchase and profitability.

For nShift, the opportunity is simple: stop shipping parcels, start delivering growth.

Today’s customers see deliveries as a continuation of their ecommerce experience. The delivery promise is a critical part of their buying decision.  They expect choice over how and where they receive their purchases, useful tracking updates and straightforward returns.  They don’t care what happens behind the scenes, so long as these core expectations are met.

The challenge is that delivery management is far from straightforward. Each carrier has its own cost structures, services and data standards. Every additional carrier adds another layer to manage.

nShift helps retailers cut through this complexity and focus on making delivery into a commercial advantage.

Our platform integrates checkout, delivery management, fulfilment automation, tracking and returns. It uses AI to simplify increasingly complex delivery operations, like carrier integrations, delivery predictions and automated carrier invoice auditing.

Our aim is not simply to make deliveries more efficient. It is to help retailers improve conversions, protect margin, reduce risks and strengthen customer loyalty.

Driving ecommerce success with deliveries

At checkout, offering shoppers the right delivery choices can give them greater confidence to click “buy now”.  By enabling customers to choose from 1.2 million pickup and drop-off locations in real time, we helped Flying Tiger Copenhagen increase conversions by 20%.

Delivery infrastructure makes it easier to grow internationally.  We helped Swedish haircare brand Hairlust enter 10 new markets, using its existing fulfilment capabilities.  Within a year, it had increased shipments by 615% and grown its revenues more than sixfold.

Of course, growth must remain profitable. Deliveries can offer significant opportunities to reduce costs without compromising the customer experience.

Improving cost control in deliveries

As delivery operations grow, however, controlling the complexity behind the scenes becomes increasingly important.

Complex, multi-carrier shipping operations can lose significant amounts through freight billing errors. Traditionally, spotting those errors has relied heavily on manual checking, which is slow and resource intensive.

The problem is widespread. nShift research with more than 120 companies found that roughly three in four still check freight invoices manually or not at all. Published benchmarks suggest invoice audits can recover around 3–7% of freight spend.

To tackle it, we’ve launched an AI-powered freight invoice audit and recovery solution which tracks down shipping overcharges that conventional checks can miss.

nShift Audit automatically checks each line on every invoice against supplier tariffs and shipment records, to identify duplicate billing, service level mismatches, and other errors.

This enables logistics and finance teams to tighten cost controls, recover overpayments and identify opportunities for future savings.

nShift Audit is the latest development in nShift’s AI innovation programme.  Other recent developments include AI-powered delivery predictions, automating carrier integrations with agentic AI and in-product assistance for delivery teams.

The common thread is practical. AI should help businesses respond faster to customers, manage increasingly complex delivery operations and protect the bottom line.

We’re thrilled to be shortlisted

The recognition is a great endorsement of our people, products, and especially our customers. It also reflects something broader: the industry increasingly sees delivery as fundamental to ecommerce success.

That is exactly where delivery belongs.

Businesses today face growing pressure to offer more choice, expand into new markets and meet rising customer expectations.  At the same time, delivery is one of the largest controllable variables in ecommerce profitability. Every failed handoff, abandoned cart or “where is my order?” call is margin leaving the business.

Our role is to simplify that complexity and turn delivery into a measurable source of growth.

That is what delivery excellence means to us — and why the judges’ recognition matters.

From checkout to shipping, tracking, returns and emissions, nShift powers the leading delivery & experience management platform.
